IRCC's shift to category-based Express Entry draws has materially changed the math for tech applicants. Throughout 2026, STEM-targeted rounds have consistently invited candidates with CRS scores in the low 480s — well below the general-draw cutoff, which often sits above 520.
To qualify for a STEM category draw you need at least six months of continuous, full-time work experience in the past three years in one of the designated NOC codes — software engineers and developers (21231 and 21232), data scientists (21211), and cybersecurity specialists (21220) are all on the current list.
Settlement funds remain a hard requirement: a single applicant must show CAD 14,690 in liquid savings, scaling up with family size. Language proof (IELTS or CELPIP) and an Educational Credential Assessment for any foreign degree should be completed before you create the Express Entry profile, not after, because the CRS score updates the moment those documents are uploaded.
